Stone Trough and a Fountain Bubbler by Don Lawler

This fountain bubbler / sculpture was created from a single block of Tennessee Marble. It was finished on July 13, 2010, measures 16" high by 9" wide by 8" deep and weighs approximately 30 to 35 lbs. It is carved in a stylized floral motif with a polished finish. Check with Yew Dell Gardens for availability.

This stone trough was carved from a single block of Indiana Limestone that measures 40" long by 17" wide by 9" high. It has a finished weight of approximately 300 to 350 lbs. It has six 1/2" drain holes in the bottom.

It has a tentative title of "Discipline". The polished encircling rectangular band of stone represents discipline that keeps the wild, creative portion (represented by the chaotic chisel pattern) in check. Too much artistic freedom, without discipline, lets the creative forces go in all directions, thus nothing is achieved. Too much discipline kills the free spirit. There must be a balance. "Felicity" granite bench by Don Lawler

This functional sculpture is entitled "Felicity", which means 'fruitful happiness'.

The leaves have a matte grey-blue finish that contrasts with the high polish of the inside and outside curved forms. The vines have a chiseled texture that gives the stone a light color.

It is carved from a single block of Georgia granite that measures 54" wide by 29" high by 21" deep.

This sculpture can be a memorial, as well as creating a major focal point in a garden setting.

The sculpture is designed to be pinned to a base, but I enjoy letting it gently rock me back and forth, in its current, unfettered condition.

This functional sculpture retails for $8,000.00 which includes local delivery or crate and handling.

"Wild Sunflower" birdbath by Don Lawler

This floral bird bath was inspired by the abundant varieties of wild Sunflowers that grow near the studio.

It is carved from 2 pieces of Indiana Limestone with the total measurements of approximately 30" in diameter and 36" high. The base is polished and the inside of the leaves have a chisel texture. The center of the flower has a stippled bush texture.

It retails for $980.00, which includes local delivery (100 miles from studio) or crate and handling.

"Promise" by Don Lawler

This Limestone sculpture, entitled "Promise", creates a strong focal point for a garden, as well as providing seating. The seat is gently curved, seemingly as a result of the vines relentlessly pushing upward.

It is carved from a single block of Indiana Limestone and measures 26"High x 32" Wide x 21" Deep. It has a polished geometric element that contrasts with the chisel textured vine shapes. The base has a rustic, natural texture around the sides and a polished top.

"Oberon" by Don Lawler

This is a giant stone head that was carved from a single block of Indiana Limestone. It weighs between 5,000 and 6,000 lbs. and measures 49" high x 46"front-to-back x 36" side-to-side.

This sculpture was inspired by the monolithic Olmec heads in Mesoamerica. This head has a specific identity of "Oberon", who is a character in William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

Oberon is a mythical creature of great power. He is a 'Father Nature' type of character. Here, he rises from the ground, taking form from the earth and roots of trees.

It sells for $8,000.00 FOB the studio in Stephensport, Kentucky. The artist will assist in the logistics of delivery and installation. This is a very large piece that will endure extremes of weather and human contact for generations, just like the ancient Olmec heads that are thousands of years old.

Stone Trough by Don Lawler

This week, I was asked if I would consider doing a stone trough. I looked at pictures of various examples on the internet that were in the UK. This is what I came up with.

It came out just a little bigger than intended. The overall dimensions are 39" long x 22" wide x 12" high. There are six 1/2" drain holes in the bottom. It is carved from a single block of Indiana Limestone and weighs about 350 lbs. SOLD!!!

This is a detail shot of the wild chisel pattern that covers the outside of the trough. I had too much fun with this one.

I pinned "Minerva" to a stone base. All of her information is featured in last week's posting (below).

This is the side view which shows that the back of the piece was ground flat and polished.

"Watcher of the Sky", "Minerva", "VA Leaf" & "Bluestone Bubbler" by Don Lawler

This sculpture is entitled "Watcher of the Sky". The title was inspired by Arthur C. Clarkes novel "Childhood's End". It shows a Maya priest in an elaborate headdress looking up at the stars. Don and Meg have become fascinated with the degree of accuracy in astronomical knowledge that the ancient Maya possessed - much in advance of the European theories on astronomy at the same time period.

The sculpture is carved from Indiana Limestone, measuring 28" long x 9" wide x 8" thick and weighing approximately 50 lbs. It was finished on March 29, 2010. !!!SOLD!!!

This sculpture is entitled "Minerva", and it shows the goddess in a helmet with the stylized beak and eyes of a bird of prey. It is carved from a single piece of Indiana Limestone, and finished on April 2, 2010. It measures 16" high x 10" wide x 8" thick (the face is lifesize) and weighs approximately 25 lbs. It sells for $240.00, which includes packing, UPS ground and insurance.

This stylized vessel of a leaf was carved from a piece of Virginia Steatite (soapstone). It was finished on Sept. 8, 2009, measures 16" long x 11" wide x 3" thick and weighs approximately 15 lbs. SOLD!!!

This stylized fountain bubbler of a seed form is carved from Pennsylvania Bluestone. It was finished on Sept. 9, 2009, measures 12" wide x 11" high x 5" thick and weighs approximately 25 lbs. SOLD!!!

"SEA LION" by Meg White

This funtional sculpture by Meg White shows a Sea Lion leaping with delight, as it 'surfs' a wave.

This monumental sculpture measures 9 feet long by 7 feet high by 3 feet wide and weighs approximately 7,000 lbs. It was completed in 2008 and carved from a single piece of Indiana Limestone.

This is a great example of Meg White's style for refining features (where it matters most). Then, leaving energetic marks (in obscure areas) that illustrate the vigorous process of direct stone carving. This sculpture retails for $18,000.00

"BREAKING FREE" by Meg White

This sculpture, entitled Breaking Free, is by Meg White. Here, it is shown in front of Klein Castle at Yew Dell Gardens in Crestwood, Kentucky.

It was carved from Indiana Limestone in 2008. It measures 70" high by 26" wide by 21" deep and weighs approximately 700 lbs.

It represents complete release and unbridled freedom to pursue ones hopes and aspirations.

The sculptor has pushed the medium of stone to its limits, with a delicate blend of refinement and energetic mark-making. It is a masterful example of Meg White's figurative work in stone. !!!SOLD!!!

"NEXUS" by Don Lawler

This sculpture by Don Lawler is entitled "Nexus". It represents a community of individuals who are brought together by like-minded interest. The intertwining forms symbolize the energy that the individuals bring to the gathering.

It was completed in March, 2010. However, progress occurred in furious bursts, that were spread out, over a 2 year period. Work on this piece always seemed to occur in bitter, windy, sub-freezing weather. Finishing this sculpture has left a contrasting set of emotions with the artist - a mixture of elation and a memory of pain.

It is carved from Indiana Limestone with the signature style of spiralling chisel textures and polished surfaces.

This functional sculpture (seating) by Don Lawler was carved from a 2,500 lb. piece of Indiana Limestone. It was completed in March 2010 and measures 52" wide by 27" deep by 24" high.
It was created from a stone that had the composition of a natural outcropping. The surface was then covered with circular glyphs.

This was a very enjoyable piece for the artist to create. The forms are varied in their creative eccentricity.

The title is derived from the concept of how different people who touch our lives, leave their effect - like ripples on a pond.

The sculpture offers a wide range of visual and tactile details to discover. It retails for $3,000.00

"POD of SUN SEEDS" by Don Lawler

This is a monumental stone sculpture entitled "Pod of Sun Seeds". This is where all of Tomorrows come from.

This sculpture measures 81" high by 39" wide by 33" deep and weighs approximately 3,000 lbs. It is carved from Indiana Limestone with inlays of Brazilian White Marble. It retails for $4,000.00

This side view shows the pinnacle shape of the natural form, which was split open lengthwise to reveal the inside shapes.

This sculpture has a variety of textures and marks. You can see the quarry drill marks along with the natural surfaces. These contrast nicely with the sawed and polished front surface, the spiralled texture of the intertwining forms and the stippled surface of the marble. This piece offers a tactile experience as well as creating a major focal point for any garden or civic site.

This stone sculpture is entitled "Reach" and it has the overall dimensions of 6'-6" High by 40" in diameter. It weighs approximately 1,800 lbs. It was finished in March, 2010 by Don Lawler.
